Management Aspects of Systems Engineering I

You would like to learn what “Systems Engineering” means? Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach. This means that several technical disciplines and domain experts are involved in system realization. Systems engineers build a network of interaction and communication with customers, users and stakeholders, and other organizational units of the company. They must consider the entire life cycle of a system. In the course program “Management Aspects of Systems Engineering I” you will learn more about the role of a systems engineer and the management of large-scale projects.

  • Gain basic knowledge in the field of systems engineering
  • Flexible blended learning format
  • Study while you work

Target Audience and Prerequisites

Target Audience

This course program is aimed at bachelor, diploma or state examination graduates with solid basic knowledge in an engineering subject, technical computer science or physics, who would like to deal intensively with issues relating to sensor technology and systems engineering.

Prerequisites

Prerequisite is a first university degree e.g. bachelor, diploma, state examination etc. in a technical subject.

Content and Learning Objectives

Content

  • Definition of system and systems engineering, system hierarchy and development life cycle
  • Justification and rationale for the Systems Engineering discipline, i.e., mastery of complexity, effective communication, and shared understanding
  • The role of the systems engineer and systems engineering processes
  • Typical reviews (quality gates) in the development lifecycle and their objectives
  • Requirements Engineering
  • System architecture
  • Integration and testing
  • Project life cycle and development models

Programme Details

The online study takes place in self-study and in the form of group work. For self-study, video lectures are available, which clearly present the course content, and a detailed script. The reader-friendly script is prepared according to the didactic concept of the University of Ulm for part-time participants: it contains, for example, learning stops, multiple-choice questions, exercises, etc.

Your mentor will offer you online consultation sessions at regular intervals to support you in working through the learning material. An online forum for exchange with the other participants will also be available.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course program, participants will be able to:

  • explain the difference of a system compared to its system elements
  • describe the role of a systems engineer within a project organization and his or her work areas
  • explain the importance of up-front analysis to avoid unplanned costs in later life cycle phases
  • recognize that communication, is an essential element of systems engineering tasks
  • analyze a system completely at a certain level of abstraction, taking into account the entire life cycle, before proceeding to the implementation details
  • elicit requirements starting from the needs of the stakeholders, identify possible solution architectures, perform trade studies and assign the requirements according to the system hierarchy
  • apply different techniques to validate architecture, design and requirements
