Do you want to learn about the operation and applications of solid-state sensors? Advances in microelectronics and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have revolutionized the sensor technology scenario. Thanks to new materials and processes, the traditional bulky, slow and expensive sensor systems have been replaced by miniaturized and integrated smart sensors based on semiconductors. This course program provides a general overview of solid-state sensors with different focus areas such as sensor system design, operational amplifiers and solid-state physics.

Target Audience and Prerequisites

Target Audience

This course program is aimed at bachelor, diploma or state examination graduates with solid basic knowledge in an engineering subject, technical computer science or physics, who would like to deal intensively with issues relating to sensor technology and systems engineering.

Prerequisites

Prerequisite is a first university degree e.g. bachelor, diploma, state examination etc. in a technical subject. Students should have knowledge of fundamentals of solid state physics and electronics.

Review of the basics of:

  • sensor system design
  • operational amplifiers
  • solid-state physics

Semiconductor-based detection methods for:

  • radiation (ionizing and non-ionizing)
  • magnetic fields
  • mechanical forces
  • temperature

Basics on MEMS (micro electro-mechanical systems)

Programme Details

The online study takes place in self-study and in the form of group work. For self-study, video lectures are available, which clearly present the course program content, and a detailed script.

The reader-friendly script is prepared according to the didactic concept of the University of Ulm for part-time participants: it contains, for example, learning stops, multiple-choice questions, exercises, etc.

Your mentor will offer you online consultation sessions at regular intervals to support you in working through the learning material.

An online forum for exchange with the other participants will also be available.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course program, participants will be able to:

  • explain the functional principles, technological implementations and application areas of different sensors
  • classify given semiconductor sensors according to fundamental principles
  • recognize and discuss the different physical phenomena in semiconductors
  • analyze the properties of various semiconductor materials suitable for the production of sensors, predict the response of the materials under different conditions, and calculate sensor examples for different measurement needs
  • design a solid-state sensor, choosing the right material among several semiconductors
  • analyze a measurement problem, compare appropriate sensor techniques, and develop their own solution
  • reflect and critically analyse research in the field of semiconductor sensors
