Solar Energy Integration into the Power Grid (CAS)

This certificate provides a comprehensive understanding of complex interactions between photovoltaic systems and the power grid. Its components focus on control aspects of PV systems and integration of a massive amount of PV energy into the electricity grid. The CAS 5 Solar Energy Integration into the Power Grid consists of three courses:

  • Solar Energy Integration and Economics (6 ECTS)
  • Grid Integration and Control (6 ECTS)
  • Smart Grid and ICT (3 ECTS)
  • You understand the technical challenges of integrating solar power into the electricity grid
  • You understand the control hierarchy of power systems
  • You can perform power system simulations
  • You can understand and optimize the grid-connected energy systems

This certificate provides a comprehensive understanding of complex interactions between photovoltaic systems and the power grid. This certificate program's components focus on control aspects of PV systems and integration of a massive amount of PV energy into the electricity grid. This course covers the following topics:

  • Energy Market

Ablauf

  • E-learning via online video lectures accompanied by readings, exercises, and online meetings with tutors and lecturers. Important questions regarding content or organization are asked and answered in the course forum.
  • Written exam with online supervision, project work with submission of written assignment, and oral presentation.

Lernziele

After successful completion of CAS students should be able to:
  • Understand the technical challenges of integrating solar power into the electricity grid.
  • Evaluate economic strategies to increase renewable energies’ share (particularly solar energy) in the energy mix.
  • Analyze the possible contribution of PV plants, inverter technologies, and control strategies from a cost-benefit viewpoint.
  • Understand the control hierarchy of power systems.
  • Perform power system simulations.
  • Develop grid integration strategies.
  • Understand and optimize the grid-connected energy systems.
  • Illustrate energy flow in distribution grids with decentralized generation.
  • Describe and design energy management systems for optimized energy production and storage.
